When searching for your key phrases, consider that there are two main things that motivate people: The pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain.

*Does this phrase represent a relief from some type of pain or a solution to a problem that someone might be willing to spend money on?

*Also, does this phrase reflect a person who is action oriented or ready to spend money?

As an example, the keyword "seasonal allergy symptoms" is likely comprised of many people who are interested in self-diagnosing--they are in the information gathering stage.

On the other hand, a keyword like "cure seasonal allergies" represents someone who is in action mode--this person wants to do something about his or her allergies.

Likewise, keyword phrases that include the word "buy" have a very high monetary value for your business, and you don't have to guess why!

Now, let's look at the data...When you're doing your research it's about supply and demand.

Google's keyword tool can tell you the "demand" for the phrase. The "demand" is how many people are searching for a particular phrase.

When you've found some phrases that have relatively high demand and are relevant to your niche, go to the main page of Google and do a search for that phrase, as you would when you are normally "Googling" something.

Above the list of results it will say how many results there are for that search. That number reflects the "supply" for that particular keyword term. The "supply" is how many web pages are competing for that particular keyword phrase.

When deciding which phrases you will use in your article submissions, you need to consider both the supply and the demand. Is the demand high enough to make it worth it for you to shoot for that phrase? Also, is the supply reasonable enough for you to handle?

Depending on what niche you're in, you may have some keywords that are high in demand and also high in supply--in that case you're in a very competitive niche, and it will just take a more concentrated marketing effort for you to rise up the rankings for that phrase.

Or, you may find that the demand is modest, but the supply is almost non-existent. In that case you might be in a very specific field that doesn't have much competition. The payoff may not be as high in terms of website traffic, but it will be easier for you to dominate the rankings for that phrase with consistent marketing.

The absolute ideal situation would be a phrase with high demand and low supply--I call those types of phrases "gold nugget keywords". If you can find those, by all means add them to your keywords list and use them in your article submissions!

Keyword research is the first step in deciding which target niche to focus on. Keyword research consists of finding targeted keyword phrases related to your niche, analyzing the competition and commercialization of your selected keywords.

As a reminder before you get started, remember to select a niche that you are interested in or passionate about. This will make building the niche that much more enjoyable and increase your chances of success. Also you should always only focus on a single niche at a time or at least fully develop the niche site before starting on your next project.

Start your keyword research off by first brainstorming on topics that you are interested in or ones that you think could be profitable. After you have your list of 5 to 10 topics, go through and rank them based on your favorites. Now start at the top and do your keyword research until you find a niche that you feel you can rank for and earn some income from. Remember to save your list for when you are ready to start your next niche.

Keyword Tools

When it comes time to do keyword research there are lot of tools available on the web today. The most popular being Google's Keyword Tool. There are also free trials from the popular paid sites like Trellian's Keyword Discovery and Wordtracker Keywords.

One of the best desktop applications that I have found is Market Samurai. If you haven't seen or heard of Market Samurai before you should download their free trial and give it a spin. You can also check out my video to see how I use it to do my keyword research.

If you don't use a tool like Market Samurai, you'll want to make sure that you still do a thorough job in researching your keyword competition and commercialization before deciding on a niche. Google's free keyword tool and traffic estimator can help, but I recommend you use one or two other free tools on the web to verify your findings.

Selecting Your Keyword Phrases

I like to start with a wide niche phrase and allow Market Samurai to suggest other popular terms and phrases. By starting with a general term, I'm letting Google and Market Samurai tell me what users are searching for and usually I find several search terms that I hadn't even thought of.

Market Samurai takes the list returned from Google's Keyword Tool and allows you to filter using positive and negative keywords. Then you can take that list of keywords and filter the results using data from Google's traffic estimator tool. I'm not even sure if you can do this via the free web tools on Google's site, but in Market Samurai it is very easy. By setting specific filters like search traffic, phrase-to-broad ratio, and several commercialization factors you can get a very clear picture of which words to focus on.

Checking the Competition

Once you have your list of 1 primary keyword phrase and 4 additional keyword phrases, you should research the page one results in Google to see if you will be able to out rank your competition. In the video, I show you how Market Samurai's SEO Competition module does this for you. If you don't have Market Samurai yet, don't worry all of the information can be pulled from Google using a variety of browser plugins and tools. If you would like to do it yourself, I recommend the SeoQuake SEO Extension for FireFox. It will display the PR value for each results plus it pulls backlink and domain information for each listing.

Determine Profitability

One last thing I like to do before I settle on a niche and keyword phrases, is to take a quick peek at what products are available to sell. Since our goal is to make money, we want to make sure that there are products to sell and buyers willing to make a purchase. I usually browse the related categories on ClickBank or Amazon for products that are converting well. I'll also spend a little bit of time looking for popular products that may be offered through other affiliate programs either directly or through someone like Commission Junction.

It's important not to spend a lot of time on this step as you can easily get bogged down in over analyzing niche keywords, competition and products. You want to make sure that the process doesn't stop you from taking action. If you are passionate about a topic and do a little bit of keyword research, chances are you will be able to make some money at it.

In other words, the searcher has already gone through the information gathering process and is setting in front of the computer, credit card in hand because he already knows what he wants.
  3. Use benefit related keywords. People don't get excited over features. They want to know what's in it for them when they buy a certain product.
  4. Find a solution to a problem. 9 out of 10 times, when someone does a search online, it's because they have a problem and they want to fix it. This doesn't always have to be a pressing problem though. So when doing niche keyword research, try to stick to pressing problems as people will be more desperate to find a solution.
  5. Use specific words in combination with your keyword. Words like buy, purchase, order, shop for, are obviously good, targeted buying keywords. If you can't come up with a good niche, going to the Google keyword tool and typing in one of these words will open new doors for you. Go over the list and look for a niche that could be hugely profitable.
  6. Don't be fooled by all the niche keyword research tools. The Google keyword tool, which is completely free, can do the trick just fine. The most important tools you do need when performing your research are your brain and motivation. You can literally find niches everywhere; on television, the newspaper, the radio, at the office. Find a problem, think about a solution, then start off your niche keyword research broad and narrow it down to more long tail keywords as you progress.
  7. Check your competition. If the first page of Google is full of web 2.0 sites and article directories for your keyword, you have a good chance of beating them. Don't skip this step. It will prevent you from wasting time on keywords that will take years to rank high for.

Now the most important step. Let's back up for just a moment to be sure you understand what we are doing. You have page one on Google with a keyword, now it's time to dominate that niche. So, if article writing is our niche we want page one in Google for 20 plus keywords.

This will happen by using other keywords within your niche that you write and submit to EzineArticles.com. Now Google sees you as an expert because you have many keywords within that niche that you are targeting.
