Niche Keyword Research - 7 Tips on How To Find Profitable Keywords That Will Boost Your Income

Niche keyword research is something every internet marketer needs to learn how to do properly. Trust me, I learned the hard way. After writing article after article around what seemed to be good keywords, it turned out none of my readers were whipping out their credit cards. And let me tell you, nothing is more disappointing than getting a whole bunch of traffic that doesn't convert.

Here are 7 tips to keep in mind when performing niche keyword research.
  1. Don't use a keyword that is too general. The biggest problem with this is that you don't know what the person typing that word is looking for. I.e. when someone searches for 'money', are they looking to save money, make more money, give away money, get out of debt,... Even the phrase 'make money' is not targeted enough i.e. do they want to make money in a 9 to 5, selling stuff on eBay, as in internet marketer, writing books,...
  2. Look for 'buying' keywords. If someone types in the specific model number of a product, you can be pretty sure he or she is extremely interested in that product. In other words, the searcher has already gone through the information gathering process and is setting in front of the computer, credit card in hand because he already knows what he wants.
  3. Use benefit related keywords. People don't get excited over features. They want to know what's in it for them when they buy a certain product.
  4. Find a solution to a problem. 9 out of 10 times, when someone does a search online, it's because they have a problem and they want to fix it. This doesn't always have to be a pressing problem though. So when doing niche keyword research, try to stick to pressing problems as people will be more desperate to find a solution.
  5. Use specific words in combination with your keyword. Words like buy, purchase, order, shop for, are obviously good, targeted buying keywords. If you can't come up with a good niche, going to the Google keyword tool and typing in one of these words will open new doors for you. Go over the list and look for a niche that could be hugely profitable.
  6. Don't be fooled by all the niche keyword research tools. The Google keyword tool, which is completely free, can do the trick just fine. The most important tools you do need when performing your research are your brain and motivation. You can literally find niches everywhere; on television, the newspaper, the radio, at the office. Find a problem, think about a solution, then start off your niche keyword research broad and narrow it down to more long tail keywords as you progress.
  7. Check your competition. If the first page of Google is full of web 2.0 sites and article directories for your keyword, you have a good chance of beating them. Don't skip this step. It will prevent you from wasting time on keywords that will take years to rank high for.
No one ever said niche keyword research is easy. Except a few gurus trying to sell you another tool perhaps. Truth is, it's hard work. But once you get the basics down, you will get better and better at it. One of those basics is knowing exactly what is a niche market. If you don't know your market, you'll barely make any profits.
